The printing process
Pad printing is an indirect gravure printing process. A squeegee is used to apply color to a cliché containing a desired graphic. A cliché is essentially a material with a deep engraving, e.g. it consists of a metal carrier which is coated with a light-sensitive layer. The cliché is then exposed and developed to create the graphics on the cliché.
- After the cliché has been prepared, it is inserted into the cliché holder of the pad printing machine, the ink tray is filled with ink and the silicone pad, also known as the printing pad, is positioned accordingly.
- The squeegee head moves forward and the flood squeegee coats the indentations with ink.
- The squeegee head moves down and then backwards, removing excess ink from the surface of the cliché.
- The printing pad is unrolled over the cliché and thereby picks up the ink from the cliché.
- The printing pad moves up and then forwards and is ready to dispense the ink.
- The printing pad moves down and unrolls over the substrate, leaving the ink on the substrate.
- The printing pad moves up and the cycle can be repeated.
